•IMD is India's National Meteorological Department established in 1875. Through a network of observation stations and advanced technology, it provides weather forecasting, meteorological observations, seismological services and climate monitoring across India.
•Working under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, IMD has regional centres across India with its headquarters in New Delhi. It employs over 4,500 people and operates hundreds of Earth observatories, radar stations and satellite monitoring systems.
• Issues weather forecasts for aviation, agriculture, and the general public; issues monsoon forecasts, which are critical for agriculture; monitors cyclones and extreme weather events; maintains a climate data record; and also provides international collaboration in meteorological research and data exchange.
Himkavach
•HIMKAVACH (Himalayan Knowledge and Visualization Based Action on Climate Change-induced Disasters) is an integrated web-based platform launched by India to monitor and manage climate-related disasters in the Himalayan region.
• Based on satellite data, ground observations and advanced modeling, this platform keeps watch over glacial lakes, snow cover, and natural hazards in Himalayan countries real time.
• As a decision support system for the disaster management authorities, it provides early warning of GLOFs, landslides, and other climate-related hazards to the people of the Himalayan region.
Genetic Baby Beta
• A "Beta Baby" refers to a child conceived after genetic screening and treatment for Beta Thalassemia, thus making it possible for couples with the genetic disease to have a disease-free child by Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).
• IVF with embryos undergoing genetic testing and selecting those who do not have beta thalassemia major in order to be sure that the child will not inherit the most severe form of the disease.
•This medical innovation prevents the spread of beta thalassemia from one generation to the next and provides a chance for an affected couple to have healthy children without the disorder. Nag MAK-2
